What you will gain from this course
Process Safety Leadership doesn't have to be hard. Like leading your organisation in any direction on any topic you are simply guiding the ship and the engines are doing the work. However not having a hand on the wheel can be disastrous and potentially you are feeling the impact of that already. Multiple incidents in a month, interruptions to production, attention from the regulator or even increased insurance costs.
This course will educate you on 12 key process safety principles with practical application examples. Each month you will receive useful templates to help you have meaningful conversations at your workplace starting to engage on process safety. You will also receive additional resources for further reading. Sometimes it can be difficult to adapt learnings to your facility so there will be one to one time with our course director (Louise Whiting) to guide you through. This could range from understanding your process better, to understanding your major hazards or more in depth conversations about some of the issues you're seeing at your facility.
At the end of the 12 month program you will have resources to talk meaningfully on 12 process safety topics with your workforce, the skills to apply inherently safer decision making and a community of your peers to continue the journey with.

What is covered in the course?
Cover the following key topics for PSM:
1) Inherently safer design
2) Standards and engineering
3) Risk matrices
4) Hazard Identification
5) Consequence assessment
6) Safety critical elements
7) Barrier performance testing and layers of protection
8) Competence management
9) Performance standards, annual review and pre-start-up safety review
10) Leading key performance indicators
11) Management of Change in projects
12) Operational Risk Assessment
I have chosen these topics to help you understand some of the key process safety management elements for leaders. We cover how we make decisions, how we know what will go wrong and how bad it could get, how we design to safeguard against this, how we check that we have done enough, how we know that what we said we would do we are doing and finally how we manage things when we find differences or changes.
What will the course look like?
For each topic we will discuss:
1) Reflections on the pre-read which covers an industry example of the benefits of excelling in this area of PSM
2) Education on the topic
3) Further industrial examples of the application
4) How this applies to your facility facilitated discussion and reflection
5) Q&A
Following each session, you will get some resources to apply your learning directly in your workplace:
1) Further reading links
2) Alternative media resources (e.g. movies, audiobooks, books or podcasts)
3) Process safety check in template to use to complete self-audits and process safety conversations
In addition to this to further support your process safety management journey there is an option to include six 1:1 coaching sessions.
What is the time commitment?
Finding time to develop new competencies can be challenging especially in a management role. Therefore I have designed the course to be flexible and as self service as possible.
The total minimum time commitment will be:
Pre-work 2 hours per session
Live Sessions 3 hours per session
Post Session 30 minutes
Total 70 hours over the year
Optionally there is additional learning (optional)
The outcome of the course is designed to be seamlessly integrated with the tasks already completed in your role. Simply we are giving you a different way of structuring process safety decisions and resources to engage more meaningfully with your organisation.
Why You Should Do the Course?
I will not patronise you. You understand process safety is important to your business and that when it goes wrong it goes wrong in a big way (financially, reputation, people and environment). We will learn about some examples in the course and the impacts they had.
However this video by Brian Appleton who was on the Piper Alpha investigation team says it well. It is not the number or duration of your actions it is the quality of your actions which will mean the difference between if your colleagues live or die. I want to help you improve the QUALITY of your process safety interactions. These are interactions you have regardless of doing the course but can you be sure that without improving your process safety quality that those who work for you will live each and every day they come for to work at your sites, from now until they are decommissioned? If you cannot answer "Yes" then you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Join us to change the future of high hazard facilities one decision at a time.
